Andy graduated from Oklahoma State University, where he majored in music education and violin performance. He holds a Master of Music degree in viola performance from Missouri State University, and he has done additional graduate work at Texas Tech University. In addition to teaching and conducting, Andy is active as a professional violist and violinist. He is a member of the American String Teachers Association, currently serving as president-elect of the Missouri chapter; and he is a member of the Missouri Music Educators Association, where he served as vice-president from 2006 to 2008.
Before coming to Springfield in 1997, Andy taught in the Enid, Oklahoma Public Schools and served as concertmaster of the Enid Symphony Orchestra. Andy was named Springfield Public Schools Teacher of the Year for 2014-2015. Missouri American String Teachers Association named Andy Outstanding Teacher for Secondary Schools in 2016, and the National Federation of High School Associations named Andy as Outstanding Music Educator for Missouri and five other states in 2017.
He enjoys spending time with his wife Elizabeth, who teaches orchestra at Pershing Middle School, conducts the Springfield Junior Youth Symphony, and plays violin professionally, and their children Allison (a violinist at Oklahoma State University) and Benjamin (a cellist and a tenor at Oklahoma City University).
